Beautiful Beaufort SC - June 7-9


June writing from Charleston, SC: Beaufort SC is one of my all time favorite places. We docked at the Beaufort City Marina, which boasts a great location right next to Waterfront Park and historic downtown streets with lovely art galleries and restaurants.  Favorite dinner: Old Bull Tavern.  Marina facilities and amenities are excellent and the people could not be more helpful.

We spent hours riding our bikes around town, enjoying gracious antebellum homes framed by ancient live oaks and peaceful marsh and river views.

Delaware City DL - July 21-22

Delaware City The stop is located on the Delaware River just at the exit of the C&D Canal.  This city, like most that we have visited, has a bunch of historic houses, but because we were here for only one evening, we didn't see very much.  The owner of the facility, Tim, gave me a good tutorial on currents and tides in the Delaware River, which we would have to travel the next day to Cape May, NJ. The creek on which the marina is located is only 65 feet wide, with a very strong current.  It was fascinating watching the very experienced dock hands manually turn our boat around in the creek, holding on to one line tied to the forward cleat on the boat and letting the current spin the boat around. You can see how narrow the creek is Part of the fun of this trip is learning new things about boating, and this was certainly a new thing to learn! McClellanville SC June 17-18

June here: What a charming shrimping town populated by 500 super-friendly folk and replete with low country history.  We docked at Leland Marina after a 5 hour ride from Charleston. Typical view on the Intercoastal Waterway in South Carolina. Shrimp boats in McClellanville, SC  We scurried over to Carolina Seafood located next to the shrimp boat dock to get their renowned shrimp and crab dips before they closed at 5 pm.  Next came a pleasant short walk with our boating buddies from Once Upon a Time (St. Paul MN/Brunswick GA folk) to the equally-renowned T.W. Graham Restaurant, which lived up to its reputation. The seafood lasagne special was perfection, as were the homemade pies and whipped cream.

Erie Canal -- August 5-11

The Erie Canal meets the Hudson River at Waterford, NY, several miles north of Troy and Albany. The intersection is a three way, with the Hudson going south, the Erie Canal going west, and the Champlain Canal going north. Waterford is a sleepy, old, decaying town that saw its heyday when there was barge traffic down the Canal.  With the advent of the interstate system and modern railroads, much of the barge traffic disappeared, and this town, like so many others along the Canal, had no reason to exist.  Left behind here and there is architectural evidence of more prosperous times and artifacts of earlier days. "Sold Everywhere" - still true 5c - not quite Waterford did have a nice Sunday morning farmers' market along the canal right where we were docked and we picked up some delicious baked goods and fresh vegetables.
